SUMO FLEXITARIAN: HOW TO LOSE THAT STUBBORN BODY FAT THROUGH FOOD

12.04.18 Eat, Learn

Many of us consider stubborn body fat a frustrating fact of life that we’ve resigned ourselves to live with. After numerous failed attempts to shift extra weight in those problem areas, feeling exasperated or simply wanting to give up is completely understandable…

But with the Sumo Flexitarian approach to food, this doesn’t have to be the case! We’re here to support you in pursuit of your health and wellness goals with some amazing healthy hacks to help you on your journey.

Did you know saying goodbye to that extra belly bulge and focusing on shedding that excess weight is far more important than just for vanity’s sake? Excess stomach fat (particularly visceral fat, the kind that surrounds your organs and puffs your stomach into a “beer gut”) is a predictor of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance and some cancers.

It may come as a surprise to hear that it can actually be more difficult to lose 5kg than it is to lose 20 to 30kg, simply because the less body fat we have, the harder the body works to keep it. So if that stubborn 5kg is constantly getting the better of you, here are some easy ways to help shift it once and for all to discover better health, stronger immunity and revitalized energy!

Cut the sugar

We hear it all the time, but why is sugar really so bad for you? Well, sugar contains fructose, which has been linked to several chronic diseases when consumed in excess including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and fatty liver disease. Studies show strong links between high sugar intake and increased abdominal fat; even ‘healthier’ sugars such as honey should be used sparingly!

When you eat a lot of refined sugar, the liver gets overloaded with fructose and is forced to turn it all into fat, so make a decision to minimize the amount of sugar in your diet.

Eliminate soft drinks, read the labels of pre-packaged foods carefully (even those marketed as ‘healthy’) and when you need a sweet treat reach for whole fruits which are extremely healthy and have plenty of fibre that mitigates the negative effects of fructose!

Eat more protein (meat or plant-powered)
Protein is an extremely important nutrient for weight control especially when it comes to targeting belly fat. It helps build and preserve lean muscle tissue and can increase the number of calories you burn. By increasing your intake of protein it releases the hormone PYY, which decreases appetite and promotes fullness – so enjoy more high-protein foods such as eggs, fish, seafood, legumes, nuts, falafel, lean meat and whole grains. Look no further than our perfectly balanced Commando Nourish Bowls: leafy greens, broccoli, brown rice & quinoa, free-range egg, pumpkin, haloumi, pepitas and your choice of meat or plant-based protein!

Ease up on refined carbs
Reducing carb intake can be very beneficial for losing fat, especially abdominal fat around the organs and in the liver. Refined carbohydrates like white bread, crackers and chips increase inflammation in your body and hinder your ability to lose belly fat. Simply replacing refined carbs with unprocessed starchy carbs (whole grains, brown rice, quinoa & vegetables) may improve metabolic health and reduce stubborn fat. Diets with fewer than 50 grams of carbs per day will put your body into ketosis, decreasing your appetite and making your body start burning primarily fats for fuel. All of our delicious Sumo Grain Bowls include a perfectly balanced base of leafy greens and whole grains so head into Sumo today and start shifting that stubborn fat in the most delicious way possible

Swap bad fats for good fats!
Repeat after us: not all fats are created equal! Research links diets with a high intake of the saturated fats (bad fats) found in dairy and meat to increased stomach (visceral) fat, as well as a range of other illnesses including heart disease, high cholesterol and cancers.

On the other hand, the monounsaturated fats (good fats) found in avocados and olive oil and certain polyunsaturated fats  (mainly omega-3s) found in nuts and salmon have amazing anti-inflammatory effects on the body which is great news! Good fats should still be enjoyed in moderation, but reaching for a Commando Salmon Nourish Bowl or adding nuts/avocado to your next SumoSalad is a strong step in the right direction to moving that stubborn weight.
