How to make a chia seed pet

While Chia seeds are making a comeback, it isn’t in the way that many 80s and 90s kids remember them. Back in the glory days, chia seeds weren’t for eating, they were for crafting!

Chia pets had a variety of incarnations, but our fond memories are of the homemade creatures are made from mum’s old stockings and covered in googly eyes and glitter.

We decided to revisit the Chia seeds first foray into popularity with this How To for a perfect crafternoon activity. The great thing about this is that you can also eat the chia seed sprouts, so it’s fun AND nourishing.

Maybe you’ll just enjoy looking at the crazy green hair your creature has grown. We’re cool with that too.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Step 1: How to make a chia pet

  • Old (or new) stockings – we used knee highs
  • Chia Seeds
  • Soil
  • Spray bottle
  • Any craft decorations to create a face eg. goggly eyes, buttons, pipe cleaners, glue
  • A pot or tray to put your finished pet in, you can also recycle tins and yoghurt containers

STEP 1 – PREPARE THE SEEDS

Step 1: Prepare the seedsSoak your chia seeds in water overnight or at least for a couple of hours.

STEP 2 – STRETCH OUT YOUR STOCKING

Step 2: Stretch out your stocking

Stretch your stocking over the pot or a glass to make it easy to fill.

STEP 3 – PUT THE SEEDS INTO THE STOCKING

Step 3: Put seeds in stocking

Put a thin layer of soil and chia seeds into the end of the stocking.

STEP 4 – FILL WITH SOIL

Step 4: fill with soil
Fill up the rest of your stocking with soil. Make sure it is nice and full, depending on how big you want your pet to be!

STEP 5 – TIE THE STOCKING

Step 5: Tie the stocking

Remove your stocking from the pot and tie a know at the end to keep your creature from escaping! We also trimmed the excess stocking length.

STEP 6 – PLACE IN YOUR CONTAINER

Step 6: Place in your container

Place your pet in your container. Depending on how full you made your stocking you might want to prop them up with a few little rocks. If you’d like to mould them into a special shape, this is the time to do so.

STEP 7 – DECORATE!

Step 7: decorate!

Decorate! Get creative and keep in mind where your seeds are as these will appear as your creature’s “hair” once they start sprouting!

Make sure you give your pet a good spray with water each day to keep the seeds happy and growing! In a few days time, your pet should start growing hair and looking absolutely sprout-acular!
