Food fears come in many forms – some of us suffer from specific food allergies that restrict us from consuming certain ingredients or items that will make us unwell or trigger a reaction. Others may avoid foods that are actually incredibly good for you because of the taste, texture or unpleasant experiences we associate with that particular food.

There’s also a trend in fearing specific foods simply because you mentally associate them over-indulgence or incorrectly assuming they’ll cause you to gain weight, become unhealthy or compromise a certain fitness regime.

One of the amazing benefits of enjoying the Sumo Flexitarian lifestyle is you get to enjoy occasional indulgences you might have otherwise been afraid to reach for, by balancing them out with plenty of natural whole foods. It’s this flexible approach that is helping thousands of Aussies overcome their food fears one plate at a time as we continue Fuelling Greatness® with every meal…

There is no set formula for overcoming a fear of foods, but with more Aussies avoiding certain foods than ever before here are a few key Sumo Solutions for commonplace food fears that many of us suffer…

Vegetarian (aka avoid meat)
While being a vegetarian definitely isn’t a food fear, it does involve a conscious decision to avoid meat consumption and this can lead to inconveniences in daily life when it comes to eating out, meal planning and socialising. Even if you’re a newbie vegetarian with a wide social circle of meat-eating friends, that doesn’t mean you need to miss out of the good times! Fantastic meat-alternatives readily available include falafel, lentil/bean patties in burgers, vegetable-based curries and even imitation meats created entirely of plants!

Celiac (aka avoid gluten)
When a person with celiac disease eats gluten (wheat, rye, barley and triticale) it triggers an immune system reaction that damages the lining of the small intestine, meaning nutrients cannot be properly absorbed…so it’s extremely important for them to avoid it! Cutting out gluten from your diet can seem like a difficult and limiting task. Fortunately, there are many healthy and delicious foods that are naturally gluten-free including fruits, vegetables, meat & poultry, fish & seafood, dairy and beans, legumes, and nuts. Our menu highlights which dishes are gluten friendly making selecting lunch extremely easy.

Nut Allergies
Wonder why kids are not allowed to have peanut butter at school? It’s quite serious actually. Nuts and peanuts can cause allergic reactions like anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening! It’s important for people to know which dishes are nut-free; at Sumo, we like to make sure everyone can enjoy delicious goodness-to-go and clearly list which of our dishes contain nuts.

Lactose Intolerant (avoid dairy)
If you are lactose intolerant, you may love dairy, but unfortunately, your body doesn’t – and it lets you know that when you have too much! If you consume lactose you might have symptoms like bloating, nausea, cramps or gas and that’s why it’s super important to avoid it. The problem is, it’s not just the usual dairy suspects like milk and ice cream causing grief, lactose lurks in many foods, from bread and biscuits to soups and salad dressings, making mealtimes a tricky task to navigate. Luckily we’ve got a delicious range of lactose-free options at Sumo!
