If you have actioned the first part of Detox Your Life you will be feeling the benefits and be ready to take the next step to revamp your wardrobe!

What we wear, just like what we eat, can affect our mood and how we feel. Fashion is fun, personal and a wonderful form of self-expression, however dressing from a chaotic wardrobe filled with clothing that no longer serves you will detract from the pieces that do, and can take the joy out of the start of your day. A great wardrobe is based on quality not quantity.

As a fashion lover & devotee to the rag trade for over a decade, my life revolved around my wardrobe. I would flood my home with the latest and greatest fashion pieces, only to find I was collecting much more than I was wearing. It all came to a head when several years ago after spending a couple of hours deliberating what to wear to a dinner party and after several wardrobe changes, I realised it was time to cull back and go for ‘quality over quantity’. The wardrobe “trim down” escalated quickly to 2 large suitcases of clothing off to my friends to battle over, 3 garbage bags of clothing, 2 tubs of shoes, a tub of accessories off to Vinnies, and I was well on my way to a sleeker closet.

Start with your Clothes

Be honest with yourself; know your style, shape and size! If you are no longer 18 and a size 6 or men’s 28 waist then you need to “let it go” and get organised!

You will need:

  • Garbage Bags
  • Sewing Kit
  • Note pad and pen
  • Quality Hangers that shape not distort your clothing

 

  1. Let go of items that are not currently reflective of your life or you (why do I still have this fur mini from 1996? Is 22 Blazers excessive? (NB. It is. According to the experts 3 blazers is the barest minimum to get you by for all occasions.)).
  2. Not everything “old” is a fashion faux pas. Some quality classics are worth keeping in your core wardrobe like a full length coat, a navy playsuit or your favourite cardigan. This detox is about items that aren’t right for you anymore, not simply replacing old with new. Phew!
  3. If something is shabby, balling, has holes, and is un-fixable: BIN IT!
  4. Ensure you set aside the essentials that will get you through work and social occasions. Opt for your favourite pieces that are versatile, dateless and can be dressed up with key fashion pieces and prints.

 A great guide for this is:

  • 1 coat
  • 1 black blazer/jacket
  • 1 pair of jeans
  • 1 dressy black pant
  • 2 other pairs of trousers
  • 4 tee shirts
  • 6 tops including a white shirt and black shirt
  • 3 skirts (ladies) 3 shorts (gentlemen)
  • 5 dresses (ladies)
  1. Pick your 5 favourite statement pieces, these could be a printed dress, printed shirt, signature shorts, pants or jacket. These items will tie back in with your essential basics.

The immediate result: 

  • Faster decisions on what to wear
  • The Fun-dometer for getting dressed goes up
  • You can actually see what is in your wardrobe

 Next up, the shoe “collection”

Clear out the shabby shoes, get out the shoeshine, work out which shoes need to be re-soled, and identify your favourites and why. Rejuvenate, recycle or discard.

Work out the essential shoes you need in your wardrobe. A good list to start with:

Women

  • 1 nude heel
  • 1 casual sandal
  • 1 smart sandal
  • 1 black boot
  • 1 smart flat
  • 1 pair of sneakers

Men:

  • 1 smart black shoe
  • 1 smart tan shoe
  • 1 casual shoe (canvas/boat shoe)
  • 1 smart sandal
  • 1 pair of sneakers

 Finally, accessories

Purchasing specialised trays will help you see your jewellery more easily.

 Accessories can become the sail to your ship when it comes to navigating your look. You can turn a basic outfit into a styled statement by simply adorning yourself with a belt, dynamic necklace and bangles.

 My recommended accessories are:

  • 1 black belt
  • 1 tan belt
  • 1 black or charcoal scarf

Women:

  • A tan bag
  • A black bag
  • 2 statement bangles
  • 2 neck pieces and a watch
  • A classic pair of studs or dangle earrings in black, silver and gold will carry you through all occasions

Men:

  • A watch
  • A metro bag in tan or black

These simple accessory additions can turn your mood and outfit right around.

New Additions

Now that your wardrobe is cleansed, keep it that way! I follow these tips to make sure anything that I buy adds value and not stress to my daily routine:

  1. Keep a wish list of items that will add to your look and wardrobe such as a new evening wear top or a white short sleeve shirt
  2. Avoid impulse buys
  3. Take note of the items you repeatedly chose
  4. Avoid squashing items together
  5. Adopt the ‘one item in’ ‘one item out’ rule

Most importantly, have fun with your wardrobe & see yourself as a blank canvas ready to be coloured with expression!
