In a rut with your diet? Nutritionist Ashleigh James says that changing your mindset is the key to transforming your health. We quizzed Ashleigh about how to get started.

If you want to change your relationship with food, where is the best place to start?

So many people I see struggle with their relationship to food. But they don’t yet understand that your relationship with food is often a metaphor for your relationship to life – it’s a mirror of your feelings about love, fear, anger and how we manage our emotions. Your self-image is connected to your self worth, so the best place to start is actually changing the relationship you have with yourself. Changing this relationship is really the only way to see lasting changes.

When starting a new health journey, why is it important to set emotional goals, rather than just physical ones?

It’s really important when setting health goals to get really clear on the outcome and how you want to feel when you reach those goals. We create our own reality, and this reality is always based on how we are feeling – feelings equal manifestation. Therefore, we need to get clear on the emotional goal and then the physical goal will follow.

What are some things that hold people back from achieving their ideal weight?

Without a doubt, mindset is the number one thing that holds people back from achieving their health goal. If you have a story playing in your head about how hard it is to lose weight, then guess what, it’s going to be really hard! Getting the nutrition right is definitely important, but it’s only half the battle. The mindset shift is the other half.

What are some of the common stories people tell themselves about food and diet and why is it important to change these narratives?

I see a lot of this in my practice. People tell themselves that they can’t lose weight, that they are genetically big, that they need to always control what they eat or diet to keep their weight down. It’s so important to transform this way of thinking if you want to see lasting results.

How can your energy impact your relationship with food?

We are all made up of energy, and our energy has its own vibrational frequency. We magnetise into our life the people, things and experiences that we are a vibrational match to. In order for you to reach your goal, you have to be on the same energetic frequency as it. Energy work is a great way to release negative energy about eating and your weight that is stored in our body. If you don’t release negative energy then you will find yourself self-sabotaging.

What is the most common issue you see with clients and their relationship with food?

The most common thing I see is women trying to diet constantly but ending up heavier and more miserable than ever. The problem is, restrictive dieting is actually the cause of the problem, not the solution. Restrictive dieting throws your metabolism off, impacts your mental health, and ultimately is stopping you from reaching your ideal weight.
