We’ve all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but why is your first meal so vital to a balanced, energised and healthy you?

If you’re someone that regularly skips breakfast it’s time to kick the habit. Eating breakfast is extremely important for starting your day right. Besides being a serious dose of delicious, a healthy breakfast helps to fuel your body, reduce blood pressure and diabetes, enhance your mood, improve your concentration, maintain a healthy weight, and is the foundation of a balanced diet.

The longer you go without food after waking up in the morning, the longer you are in the state of shutdown mode. Breakfast provides the body and brain with fuel after a night of fasting. Fun fact, that’s where its name originates; breaking the fast!

If you’re skipping breakfast to lose weight, you might want to think again. A healthy breakfast can be good for your waistline as it can help prevent over-eating and snacking later in the day. Also if you skip breakfast regularly, the body will be forced to slow its metabolism down in order to conserve energy, which results in weight gain long term.

Breakfast is also a chance to consume important nutrients like fibre, calcium, vitamin C and folate all in one go. Eating a bowl of muesli, yoghurt and berries will easily achieve this in one sitting! Fruit and vegetables are also a good source of vitamins and minerals so try to include them into your morning meal, whether it is a banana with your muesli or tomato and mushrooms with your eggs.

Even if you are short on time in the morning it’s important to prioritise your morning routine. If necessary, wake up a bit earlier to prepare your food or prepare the night before to make your breakfast and morning fuss-free.
