The Mighty Avocado by Pete Evans

Summer time is my favourite time of year to enjoy salads, well truth be told I love salads all year round but the abundance of ingredients during the warmer months of year allows your seasonal eating to go wild!  One of my favourite summer ingredients is the delicious and nutritious avocado!

Now there are dozens of varieties of avo’s, as I like to call them, and the rich and creamy Hass variety has got to be the most popular one. They are available throughout the year, but can be easier to find in the warmer months of spring and summer.   The good news is avo’s delectable flavour is not their only talent as they are loaded with nutritional benefits too; including easily absorbed fat-soluble phytonutrients like alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin and lutein which are cartenoids (natural pigments) that protect against cataracts and certain types of cancer, and reduce the risk of macular degeneration.

The mighty avo has a wide range of anti- inflammatory benefits too due to its phytosterols, antioxidants and alpha linolenic acid content making them ideal for people suffering from arthritis. Avo’s also contain folate which is a B vitamin that generates healthy tissue and cell development which is especially important during pregnancy and infancy.

Have I rattled off enough to convince you to consume more of this near perfect food, or have you got time for one more? OK, if you insist… Avo’s omega 3 fatty acid and vitamin E content make them ideal for reducing the symptoms of Alzheimer’s in its early stages and also help to reduce the progression of the disease.

In reality I’ve only touched on the countless health benefits of avocado’s, but don’t take my word for it, I urge you to expand your knowledge and get to know what you’re putting in your mouth, by this I mean do your own research and learn all about foods like Avocado’s inside and out and be sure to enjoy them in various preparations (especially your salads) everyday!
