SumoSalad joins Lane Cove Community Garden

SumoSalad in the Community Garden

Is there anything more satisfying than watching your garden grow? At SumoSalad we pride ourselves on sourcing all of our ingredients from local farmers to create fresh and delicious salads for you to enjoy.

But why should our farmers have all the fun? Here at Sumo HQ, we wanted the opportunity to get out from behind the desk and practice what we preach – delicious vegetables grown and eaten seasonally. But being in the middle of Sydney and not out in the fields of rural NSW, we needed to employ some lateral thinking.

And so, we take great pleasure in introducing you to our new partners and gardening mentors, PermaPatch – the Lane Cove community garden. PermaPatch is a group of gardeners who promote all kinds of sustainable gardening techniques to the local community. From their patch behind the Old Uniting Church, they grow fruit, vegetables and herbs, collect honey and tend chickens and fish. They use practices like composting, companion planting, animal husbandry and sustainability.

Basically, us desk rats could learn a lot from them!

Our first task has been to sponsor a living wall in the garden using hydroponics technology, installed by Trev at Hydro Masta. If you’ve visited our new concept stores you’ll know what we’re talking about. Ideal for small spaces, it’s a way of growing a veggie patch in the most unlikely of places on any wall, inside or outside.

So in the coming months, not only will be getting our hands dirty and pitching in as volunteers, but we will also be bringing you spring gardening tips, ideas and inspiration from the experts.

Watch this (urban concrete) space…
