FUTURE FLEX: WHY 2018 WILL BE THE YEAR OF FLEXIBLE LIVING

Organisation, planning and structure are highly encouraged in the workplace, at school, your diet and in parenting. But how much is too much? At what point do we become rigid and unchanging?

At Sumo we’re all about embracing the benefits of a flexible lifestyle and this is especially important coming into the New Year! It’s time to find a balance between structure and spontaneity – after all, flexibility leads to openness, more opportunities, less anxiety and a more enriched, vibrant life. By combining structure and organisation with a desire for fun and taking advantage of opportunities, you’ll get the best of both worlds and discover new sides of yourself along the way.

Let’s make 2018 your best year yet as we continue to discover the beauty of flexitarian food and flexibility in life! To get started, try these four ways to increase your flexibility on the daily…

LIVE IN THE MOMENT
Don’t think about all the other things you need to do. When you’re at work, don’t fantasise about being on vacation; on vacation, don’t worry about the work emails piling up in your inbox. Living in the moment (also called mindfulness) is a state of active, open, intentional attention on the present. Slow down and focus on what you are experiencing at that moment. Remind yourself of what you value most.

TRY NEW THINGS
Whether you realise it or not, you spend the majority of your day doing things you’ve already done hundreds (maybe even thousands) of times before. Very rarely do we actually try new things for the purpose of engaging a unique experience. But what if you made it a point to do exactly that? There are many benefits to doing new things like stimulating creativity, getting to know you better and much more. So try something new! Try a new food, sport, type of movie, anything! We hear there is there new diet, Flexitarianism, which is definitely worth trying ;)!

GO WITH THE FLOW
Allow others to take charge. It’s all about rolling with the punches. Have a day where your friends or partner plan everything for you without your input. This is a great way to see how it feels to be on the other side of rigid. It’s accepting change without getting frustrated. It’s taking what life gives you, rather than trying to mold it to be exactly as you want it to be.

EMBRACE NEW OPPORTUNITIES
Heading into the New Year, one thing we won’t be doing is saying “no” purely out of habit. Let’s try be “yes” people – within reason of course! Instead of thinking of all the reasons not to do something new, think of the reasons why you should do it. Keep the bigger picture in mind. For example, you might not feel like getting up and going to the gym, but think about how amazing you are going to feel afterwards.
