My Sumo x Casey Conway
Casey Conway is without a doubt one of Australia’s most inspiring individuals. An athlete of Aboriginal Australian descent, Casey’s talents as a footballer saw him picked up as a member of the NRL’s Sydney Roosters. After retiring in 2005 due to a shoulder injury, Casey later came out as in support of the LGBTIQ community as a proud gay individual himself, a move that earned him accolades of praise for his role in breaking down prejudice frequently faced by the gay community.
Now a youth worker, model, advocate for Aboriginal Australia and LGBTIQ rights with a passion for health and fitness , Casey truly embodies what it means to be a passionate and involved member of the wider Australian community.
Ahead of the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras we chat to Casey about what Mardi Gras means to him, his tips for a healthy lifestyle and of course – his favorite salad!
Q. Casey, thank you for chatting with us today in the lead up to Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras! We’re huge fans of yours. What do the Mardi Gras celebrations mean to you and those close to you?
A.To me, Mardi Gras is a celebration that showcases the diversity of our community. It gives everyone within it the opportunity to show pride in who they are but also allows us to reflect on past struggles that have enabled us to live openly and love freely today. Mardi Gras is a time for everyone to come together to listen, learn, watch and have fun.
Q. As a sportsman, staying in shape is clearly a top priority for you and you’re as athletic as ever even though you’ve retired from competing. Do you have any exercise secrets you canshare?
A.Mix it up! Don’t fall into a routine that becomes boring. I love going to the gym, it’s like therapy for me, but at times I need to do something different to keep the motivation levels up. I’m up at 5am every morning and I’m lucky enough to live right on the beach so I’ll often go for soft sand runs, or use the public workout facilities here on the Gold Coast. I also ride and swim. Weekends are for those long hikes in the bush.
Q. Anyone with Instagram can see you love the great outdoors both in Australia and overseas. Have you always had a passion for adventure?
A. I have! I grew up in country Queensland with 4 brothers so every day after school and the weekends were for adventures. I still have that spark and desire to see and do new things as much as I can. I often find inspiration for new adventures by looking at Instagram travel pages or searching hashtags.
Q. Whether you’re a sports star, teacher, executive or musician – eating well should be a big priority for everyone. What can you tell us about your favourite foods to keep fit?
A.I agree, eating right is the key to good health. I like to keep it simple so make sure I get lots of fresh fruit and vegies. My favourite food to accompany the essentials is a nice piece of grilled fish!
Q. Finally, one for the salad enthusiasts out there. What’s your favourite Design-Your-Own SumoSalad creation?
A. I love a Brown Rice & Quinoa, Pumpkin, Beetroot, Olives, Red Onion, Red Capsicum, Avocado, Haloumi Cheese and Roasted Garlic. Yum!
